Thank you for your interest in the Stillwater MTB program. We are a competitive co-ed riding program for students attending schools within the District 834 boundaries in Stillwater, MN, as outlined in our student Eligibility Policy. We are considered an “independent provider” by the school district and so we must provide all our own volunteers for support.
Stillwater Mountain Bike is a part of the Minnesota Cycling Association (MCA). We have 5 races over 7 weekends starting in late August. Middle school races are on Saturdays, high school races on Sundays.
We start summer practices in July which consist of 2 practices per week for the full team and a 3rd ride for advanced riders. For these we meet at a designated trailhead. Once the school year starts we practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after school. We ride from the high school to various singletrack trails, gravel roads, and other training opportunities. Practice rides will leave the high school at 4:00 pm and return at 6:00 pm (ish). We will have practices until the final race weekend which is in mid-October.
We rely on our volunteer Coaching community, and families who support and help to make our team successful. We have riders who are focused on training to be fast, competitive racers. We also have riders who are focused on having fun with friends while learning new skills, but at a less competitive level. Additionally, we also have riders who are a mix of both. We thrive on and encourage all motivations and experiences.
Our coaches’ abilities also range from experienced race orientated coaches to casual riding parent coaches. Like our riders, we need all varieties ansd skill sets to help insure a successful season. There are coaching sessions for coaches as well as coaches rides to help prepare for the season.
Riders are divided into practice groups based on many factors including: bike skills, ride goals and fitness. We have coaches who have dedicated every Tuesday-Thursday for the season and some choose one day of the week to be available for the season. Additionally, we have some who have more inconsistent schedules, but offer help when they can. Group coaches are not expected to attend races, but the riders always love the support on race day when a lot of their coaches are there cheering them on!
The MCA has 3 levels of coaching, you must be registered and licensed at a minimum of Level 1. We have at least one Level 3 or Level 2 coach with each ride group as leads, Level 1 coaches provide additional support within the groups.
